When it comes to many of these retro-inspired shooters though, the gameplay is the star of the show and it looks like GRAVEN is built for player expression and finding clever solutions to problems. Following this life-changing event, the Priest prays for peace but is interrupted by a higher power known as The Creator who begins to give him commands to hunt down heretics responsible for plagues and interrupting the natural order of the area. According to a recent press release, the game’s plot is driven by the Priest’s adoptive daughter being sacrificed by a heretical member of the Orthogonal Order, which drives the man to retaliate and leads to him being exiled to the burning sands. In GRAVEN, players take on the mantle of a disgraced Priest of the Orthogonal Order. It was also confirmed that the game will be released on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch in 2021. GRAVEN is being developed by Slipgate Ironworks and will be published by both 3D Realms and 1C Entertainment. Leading the charge was a project from the 3D Realms portfolio, a fantasy game bathed in low-poly nostalgia called GRAVEN, which looks a little bit like Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, mixed with Hexen and a dash of Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Keep your eyes peeled for what new weapons and items might open things up as you play.Over the weekend, fans of retro-inspired FPS games were treated with a two-day event from 3D Realms called Realms Deep, which featured announcements and interviews with New Blood Interactive, Running with Scissors, Nightdive Studios, and more. Graven could possibly be considered a Metroidvania-lite, and it's taken a lot of work designing and balancing locations. The unique modular pieces produced each yielded a ton of new assets for use in the larger levels speeding up their development. Since they usually needed less development time to create, this helped refine the pipeline for larger areas. The player can then unlock a shortcut back to the town of Cruxfirth via a gated off tavern.īeing smaller, modular levels had another great effect on the project. The hedge maze itself organically creeped into the archives. This allows us to have the Archives on a higher elevation so the clock tower is an almost always visible landmark. The Ring of Passing is another example that comes later in the game, enabling movement through Cursed Barriers which have been encountered multiple times at that point, while the ring is equipped of course.Ī vertical climb through a thick, hedge maze garden connects the Clotted Avenues and the Cruxfirth Archives (library). The Resonating Stone is found early in the Clotted Avenues and on top of providing combat benefits, the player can now return to previous areas and unlock new connections and secrets, such as uncovering the Peat Burner, a powerful explosive weapon which is not otherwise available. This has made the area perfect for secrets, discovery, gameplay, and returning later with new items that allow for additional exploration. In our first HUB, the Lice Slough connects the swampy Brine Muskeg and the quarantined Clotted Avenues under the town of Cruxfirth via four different entrances/exits. That's where our smaller connection levels came into play as many of those areas grew to become their own areas of importance and the assets created for them became some of the most widely used and important modular kits for the project. We found a little extra padding here and there was useful for transitioning, storytelling, pacing, etc. Graven's levels are big and level designers are given a lot of freedom to use the space. This requires a lot of unique connections for designers to create. Our game's world opens up through exploration, secrets, and unique items that enhance the player's navigation. I’m Chris Holden, Lead Level Designer on Graven.
